STORIES FROM JEFFERSON STREET

Cutting hair on Jefferson for 37 years J. T. Smith, barber

I think I have been on Jefferson longer than anybody other than Mr. Craighead, who is the barber across the street from me now. I was across the street in the Gardner building for 19 years.

J. T. Smith

I grew up at 12th and Jackson – right around the corner. I went into the service in 1965. The interstate came through and they moved my parents while I was in the service. I got back from the service in March 1968. Martin Luther King was shot in April 1968. I opened my shop in September.

I don’t hear any gossip from my customers because men talk about sports when they are getting their hair cut!
